The Gunbot Mark II

We started robots as spaceships with the gunbot, a simple robot intended to serve as the baseline for our exploration of building robots as spaceships. Now, I'm playing a game where I want a simple trackbot as the basic foe. Robots as Spaceships feels roughly complete at this point, and I present to you our new robot:

We are using a TL8 200 lb trackbot chassis with 6 systems of armor, an onboard medium computer, Digital Camera, Small radio, and two weapon mounts, using the deflection boost optional rule, and  a simple armor facing focusing on the front and turret. Many guns can fit on this platform, but we will show a couple of examples from the basic set.

Our resulting Robot has:

NameSTHPMoveDRSMWeightCost
Gunbot without Gun20203/3021/7 DR
+0 SM
119 lbs
$2,825
Gunbot with Assault Carbine 20203/3021/7 DR
+0 SM
138 lbs
$9,785
Gunbot with LMG 20203/3021/7 DR
+0 SM
167 lbs
$3,925

This gunbot has no peripheral vision, a radio range of 5 miles, and a complexity of 3. It has to be driven remotely... as any sensible TL8 fighting drone should be. Because this will be driven remotely, we don't need to calculate its IQ, DX, or skills. Its Handling/Stability is -1/4, though that's just extrapolated from SM+4 for now.

A Breakdown of the Build:

  • 200 lb trackbot chassis (1 control center, 1 track system, 3 power cells, 6 armor systems) $1100, 110lbs
  • 2 gun mounts (20% of an arm system, bought twice) $400, 4lb
  • Small Radio (High Tech 38), 0.5 lbs,  $250
  • Digital Camera (High Tech Page 43),0.5 lbs, $75
  • Medium Computer (High Tech Page 20), 4 lbs, $1000
  • LMG with 300 rounds, 30 lbs, $6,600, plus 18 lbs, $360
  • Assualt Riffle with 300 rounds, 9 lbs, $900, plus 10 lbs, $200

Two guns mounts were chosen so as to  justify firing a gun that would take two hands. At ST 20, larger weapons are certainly available, though many of those are quite heavy, and might slow the bot down.

The bot is still quite cheap, as most things build with spaceships are. It should be a formidable opponent, able to take a lot more than a single bullet. If fighting each other, these should probably be equipped with heavy weaponry, especially given that remote combat drones are battlefield weapons.

Its been a long way to get here, but I think the mark II is a huge improvement on the mark I, and most importantly, it marks robots as spaceships being really ready. Watch for more robots!
