Death Merchant

Death Merchants appear as clouds with varying degrees of opacity, devoid of any features but the occasional tendril. Death Merchants visit those who have a loved one who is desperately ill, declare that 'Your concern has reached us, and we are willing to make a deal'. They make an offer -- the loved one's life for their own. The deal is presented as though the buyers will die, and as if the death merchant doesn't really care which soul they get.

This is all a deception.
Death merchants crave power and wealth among the fae. Once the deal is made, they will cure the loved one and threaten to 'take back what is mine' if the victim does not accompany them into faerie to be sold on the markets there. They do many of their business dealings in their humanoid for -- solid black with a featureless face and almost always wearing black robes -- the image of the classic grim reaper. Death merchants control a good deal of wealth among the fae, mostly in the form of favours they can call in or humans of a particular quality.

Death Merchants are beings of their word (to the letter, not the spirit). They can only use their leech on people who have agreed to it, or who are in breach of contract. They favour verbal contracts, as such things are easier to twist and get crap past the radar. They physically don't have many weapons either -- this does not make them defenceless! If attacked a Death Merchant will try to flee, and if that doesn't work they will call in one of their favours with a fae to summon help!

Heroes may be trying to rescue someone from a death merchant, but they can also encounter a death merchant when looking for a supernatural broker. Death merchants understand and accept wealth in all of its forms, and while they mainly deal in slaves, they often have access to other forms of wealth. Giving one $100,000 dollars instead of a new slave is quite acceptable -- though the  payer should be aware merchant will turn it around and use the mortal money for something more to their tastes...
